Lumbar Laminectomy or Laminotmy

Please follow these guidelines after your surgery:

  • Increase your activity progressively, as tolerated.
  • Do not lift more than 7 to 10 pounds, which is approximately a gallon of milk.
  • Do not sit for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time. You may gradually increase this as tolerated. Sitting commonly aggravates back and leg pain. Standing upright, lying flat or slightly reclined often helps.
  • Use proper body mechanics at all times. The general rule is to keep the spine straight letting your legs do the work of lifting or of getting you out of bed. Three basic rules to follow are: stomach in, knees bent, and back straight.
  • No driving for 2 weeks.
  • Back exercises are not allowed, but you may walk. Walking is the best exercise for you and you may progress this as tolerated. It is OK to walk outside as long as your are walking on even surfaces and are wearing good walking shoes.

Please note that persistence of your pre-operative symptoms should improve in time. It may also mean you should limit your activities and amount of sitting to no more than 20 minutes at a time. If your symptoms do not improve with rest or pain medication, please call our office at (207) 885-0011.

“My training in electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG) extends back twenty years to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. I find it so fascinating to figure out what is really causing someone’s pain and help them restore function and ultimately return to a normal lifestyle.”
